What I Got For Christmas! ...and a Sephora/Shoes Haul

So keeping with my new little tradition I started last year, I wanted to share with you all what I got for Christmas! You all loved that video so much that I decided to do it again this year... with a little twist.

First of all, we had a wonderful Christmas this year with lots of time spent with family and friends. It's so much fun being able to give gifts and give back this time of the year.  It's also such a great feeling to receive special gifts from loved ones, which is why it's so fun for me to share it with you all.

Now as I explain in the video, I'm pretty much the worst at making Christmas lists and asking for things I want. So that usually means I receive a lot of gift cards, which I love. Mainly because being able to go shopping with the gift cards and cash I've gotten is really fun.  I can have some fun shopping and pick out exactly what I want. Well this year, I decided to include what I purchased in this video as well. So I'm sharing my actual gifts as well as what I purchased after. Sort of like a little Christmas haul.
I got some amazing shoes I had been looking at and wanting for what feels like forever. I'm so happy with them! I also picked up some fun beauty stuff from Sephora.

Our Christmas Dinner... With Recipes

Hello and Merry Christmas to you all! I hope you guys had a wonderful holiday filled with lots of time spent with family and friends. We really did this year!
So to celebrate this year, we had family over for Christmas dinner at our house on Christmas Eve. We usually go out for a nice dinner on Christmas Eve, then do Christmas dinner mid-day on Christmas day. This year, I really liked the new tradition. To me, Christmas Eve is so special and having a late night dinner followed by lots of time together, presents, and sweets made for a pretty perfect night.

So I didn't get a ton of photos around the actual house since I already shared all of our Christmas decor in my recent Christmas decor video and blog (you can check that out here if you missed it), so I focused mainly on the food.


SO much yumminess! We spread all the food out on the island in the kitchen, which was really easy so that everyone could grab exactly what they wanted. 

Before dinner, as everyone was arriving, we had a few snacks out. This is my FAVORITE dip/spread ever. Everyone likes it and it's super tasty. 



It's called "Pinecone Dip".  I first had it at my bridal luncheon given to me by my mother in law. So this recipe is all thanks to her.


Pinecone Dip
1 1/4 cup sliced, roasted almonds
1 (8oz.) pkg cream cheese, softened
1/2 cup mayonnaise
5 slices crispy bacon
1 T chopped green onions (I always add just a bit more)
1/2 t dill weed
1/8 t pepper

Combined softened cream cheese & mayo. Add bacon, onion, dill, & pepper. Mix well. Chill overnight. Form into a "cone" shape and cover with almonds. 
*You can also roast whole almonds yourself, or use whole, roasted almonds (store bought). Then, when you add them, you overlap them around the dip which is where the "pinecone" name comes from. I don't like chewing into whole almonds, so I used sliced, but you can use whatever you want.


On the other side of the kitchen, I set up sort of a drink area and a little dessert area.

My mom put together this really easy and yummy punch she's been making since I was little. It's so simple. Just lime sherbet and ginger ale. Delish spiked too. ;)


I also put out some Chex to snack on. I didn't bake it like usual. I just grabbed a bag of spicy, and a bag of bold party mix and put it together. 
Oh, and some little clementines of course.

For desserts, I set out some mint sugar cookies my mom made, some little candies, a turtle cheesecake (store bought, frozen... was pretty delish), and a chocolate Coca-Cola cake my mom made.



For dinner, we had ham and turkey, cornbread dressing, squash and broccoli casserole, green beans, mashed potatoes, deviled eggs, and sweet potato casserole.  We also had cranberry sauce, but I had that on the table.



I made the sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, and broccoli casserole. Here are the recipes for those if you're interested...

Broccoli Casserole
2 bags frozen broccoli florets (cooked and drained)
2 cans celery soup
2 cups grated cheddar cheese
1 1/2 cups mayo
4 eggs beaten
salt & pepper to taste
1/2 cup of chopped onion
Topping: Plain or seasoned bread crumbs (whatever you prefer)
small amount of butter for drizzling over the bread crumbs
Cook broccoli as directed. Mix cheese, soup, onion, eggs, mayo, s&p in a large bowl. Fold in broccoli gently. Put in buttered casserole dish. Cook at 400 for 15 minutes. Sprinkle bread crumbs over top and drizzle with a bit of melted butter. Bake another 30-40 minutes until brown.

Sweet Potato Casserole (My Grandma's recipe) 
3 cups cooked, mashed sweet potatoes (I use Bruces canned yams)
1 cup sugar
2 eggs, beaten
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/3 cup evaporated milk 
1/2 cup butter (melted)
Combine mashed sweet potatoes, sugar, eggs, vanilla, milk, & butter. Beat with mixer until smooth. Spoon into a greased 2 quart shallow dish.
Topping: Combine 1 cup firmly packed light brown sugar, 1 cup all purpose flour, 1/3 cup melted butter, 1 cup chopped pecans
Sprinkle topping over top of casserole and bake at 350 preheated oven for 30 minutes. Let cool a bit before serving.

For my mashed potatoes, I really don't go by any recipe. So here's my non-specific recipe I just pulled out of my head...

Mashed Potatoes
8 medium-sized gold potatoes (peeled and chopped into chunks)
1 1/2 stick of butter
milk
chopped garlic or garlic powder
salt and pepper
Boil potatoes for about 12-15 minutes. Drain and transfer to a big serving bowl. Add a stick of butter. Mash them with a potato masher (I don't like my potatoes super creamy, I like a smooth-slightly chunky consistency). Add more butter as needed. Add a splash of milk here and there as you mash, until you get the consistency you like. I added at least a cup. Add garlic and salt and pepper to taste. I don't add too much garlic (as I don't want these to be "garlic mashed potatoes"), I just add a small bit for taste.

As far as the actual set-up, most of the serving bowls and platters are my everyday Mikasa "Italian Countryside" dishes, Pyrex, and Corning Wear.  The deviled egg dish is by Wilton  and the little copper three-tiered stand that the bread is on was a great find at World Market years back.  


The little wooden risers are from Pottery Barn a few years back. I found some similar options below.
My "Christmas dishes" with the pretty silver snowflakes are from Target. I got mine a few years back, but they still have the serving dishes.
I think when you have this many dishes grouped together, adding some height is important. Saves you some space, plus it just looks pretty!

We had dinner in the dining room, which looked pretty similar to the home decor tour. I just set out some red cloth placemats, a red holiday candle, and called it done. :)

I was SO surprised to receive these beautiful flowers the day before. They are from my sweet friends, Andrea and her mother, Michele. So thoughtful! They looked perfect in the kitchen. We're still enjoying them.

New Year's Eve Party Makeup Tutorial & OOTD

O.M.G, you guys... Christmas is in 2 DAYS!! I can't even believe it! So before the holiday celebration gets officially underway around here, I wanted to share with you all one of my "go-to" party makeup looks, perfect for New Year's Eve! This would also be gorgeous for a Christmas Eve dinner celebration, or just any party in general, really. It's one of my favorite looks, and best of all, is super simple!

I also put together sort of an effortless and fun party look that works especially well in our neck of the woods, where it can get pretty cold on New Year's Eve.
Not that wearing a slinky little dress that covers a quarter of my body can't be fun, but seriously, I like to dress season-appropriate for where I live. I've always been like that.  So definitely don't feel like you have to go the typical sequined mini or tiny dress route for New Year's if it's freezing out.
You can definitely dress party-appropriate, fashionable, and be season-appropriate.
There's so many awesome options!

This outfit reflects my personal style perfectly... I'd like to say my style is effortless (not like I tried too hard or too trendy), classic, and with a bit of an edge.
Most of the elements are simple and chic (fitted blazer, silk top, leather tassel clutch), with one pretty trendy element.... the slouchy, tapered pant.  Oh, and a few edgy elements: the necklace, and spikes on the back of otherwise classic pointed-toe shoes.

So let's talk about these pants...


I'm a little obsessed with them. They're slouchy, tapered, and in a gorgeous crepe-y fabric that looks and feels really nice.
I also have them in black. They seriously go with whatever you put with them. They're just so easy.  The nicer fabric gives them much more versatility than a typical cotton knit style.


The bright fabric (these are in the shade "carnelian") provides a little pop for the outfit. That's a big tip of mine where New Year's Eve is concerned. Don't get lost in a sea of black clothing. Black is such a popular pick for New Year's. Stand out with a pop of unexpected color. Whether it's with fun shoes, a bag, or in my case, fun pants.


Some large, chunky accessories, and these fabulous (and affordable shoes) complete the look.

A little home decor haul...

We all know that I share beauty hauls with you all on my YouTube channel a little more regularly than I'd like to admit... So a few days ago when I picked up some really awesome home finds, I thought, why not do the same with home decor stuff here?

It's no secret that you all are enjoying the weekly home posts on here, so I thought I'd let you in on some of my recent finds that I actually scored for some amazing deals.

Earlier in the week, my mom and I went to lunch, to one of my favorite home decor outlets, and to the mall to do some quick, last-minute holiday shopping. 

First I'll share my sweet outlet finds. We visited the Ballard Designs outlet in Roswell, GA, which is basically one of my best home decor finds ever. Years back, around the time we moved into our first home, I started shopping their website after I found a gorgeous photo online of some grouped wall mirrors that led me there. Well, at around $250 for a set of two (I really needed wanted three), I passed, but shopped the site's more affordable offerings.
Which brings me to the discovery of the outlet store... and one of the first days I visited. Yep, I found three of those exact mirrors I had been eyeing for $39 a piece.  Sold, my friends. 

I've been shopping there ever since, sharing my gem of a find with friends and family when I want to take them to my "happy place" haha.

So I was really excited that they had a ton of great sales going the day I brought my mom.  Let me just get right in to the goods...

I spotted a little pile of about three "D" faux wreaths when we came into the door.  Nope, no other letters, just D.  That's the thing about the outlet. You find some seriously random stuff. 



Oh and those are the mirrors! Now you recognize them, huh?  They're some of my favorite things in our home. You may remember our peacock wreath that hung from them just like this at our old place too. If you remember that, props to you because you've been following for a loooong time haha. ;)
I still need to shape it and fluff it a bit, but I'm so thrilled I found it! Normally, it was $45. I got it for $16. 

Next, probably my best find of the day. Going down into our basement, we have a little sconce light on the wall lighting the stairway. The existing one that was there when we moved in is covered in overspray (dang painters), bent, and is actually an outdoor light. Sounds gorgeous, huh?
Well I knew I wanted something a little special eventually to put there, but didn't want to shell out a ton since it's not really majorly in your face all the time. 

I had actually seen this in the Ballard catalog this month and thought it would be perfect there! Buuuut I didn't want to spend around the $130 they were asking for it. 


Yup. The outlet had ONE. My mom actually spotted it and said, "That would be cool in the basement."  I don't think she believed me that it was the exact one I had been wanting... So I scooped that baby up at $60.
Not the best photo of it (I got impatient and decided to photograph all of these things at night...?), but you get the idea. It actually came in a single sconce as well, but I thought the double would be better since it will put out more light and I just think it looks better. They also had it in chrome, but I grabbed the last oil-rubbed bronze one they had. It really goes with the whole "industrial" antique feel we're going for down there.  We're actually going to hang it tonight, so I'll be sure to share a little photo of it all installed in the next home post next week!

And finally, my little black and white fringe bolster pillows.


These are custom pillows that you can order from their website in the colors and fabric of your choosing. These were the only ones they had, in any color. Someone probably returned these, or either the store made the wrong color. Who knows. But get this, they were $8. Yeah. Depending on the color and fabric, these run from $34-$59.  So I'm super excited about them. Not sure where they're going to live yet. I think they'll look nice on our white couch, or even on a pair of accent chairs. They even look cute on the head chairs in the dining room.

So those were all of my great outlet finds. I actually ordered something really awesome from their website last week for the basement. Something I've been looking for for a particular space down there for a while.  There's actually been some progress down there recently! Can't wait to share that soon when it comes!

At the mall, my mom treated me to this precious "hot cocoa" pot from Williams-Sonoma.




Isn't that the sweetest? It actually has a little electric whisk inside of it that spins and "makes" the hot chocolate. Pretty unique and cute, I think.  We're hosting Christmas Eve dinner at our house this year, so I can totally see it all set up (with some big fat marshmallows, of course) for everyone to enjoy after dinner. I thought it went with our kitchen pretty perfectly too. Such a unique little find.

NEW Enlight Collection Swatches/Review

Last week, Sigma Beauty launched an all-new,  gorgeous, makeup collection themed around warm neutral shades. I've had mine for a few weeks now and couldn't resist digging in.
Let's just be honest, they kind of had me at "warm neutrals".


The collection consists of one eye shadow palette (twelve shades), three eye shadow bases, three lip glosses, three eye pencils, and three eye brushes.

So as I usually do, I really wanted to use the products and wear them at least a few times before writing this post.
Well, turns out, I've been wearing the eye shadows every day (other than when I do specific videos wearing certain products I'm talking about).  I'm super impressed with them.

Ok ok, so before I get ahead of myself, here's all the eye candy! Keep reading for more of my thoughts on the particular products.

These have INSANE color payoff and blend so smoothly, with very little effort.  It seems that right now, I have a ton of these "warm neutral" palettes to play with. From Naked 3, to Unzipped, now to Warm Neutrals.  I know, it's been a crazy month for palettes for me. But I'm really loving the variety in this one. It has such an awesome mix of matte and frost shades with perfect crease and blending shades, as well as nice highlight and lid shades to create tons of variety.  I've loved every look I've created with this and can say it's becoming a fast favorite.

It's no secret that I've been a fan of the Sigma bases since they first came out. I'm really excited about these three new shades. These are super pigmented, and work just as well as the originals- staying creaseless (with my super oily lids, which not many bases can do), and holding up well over time. By that, I mean they haven't dried out in the pots. Most cream shadows similar to these begin separating from the edges and shrinking up in as little as 6 months of having them. None of mine have and I've had my original ones for over a year. Definitely some of my favorites.  I can see the pink being in my daily rotation for a while.

By looking at these, you can probably tell which ones I'd recommend as a highlight, contour, and actual blush.  These blend really smoothly and hold up well throughout the day.  As far as the actual shades, I think they'd work for a very wide range of skin tones. Especially the Serene shade (the rosier, actual blush shade). It has a ton of color payoff and can actually build very dark. However, you can apply it lightly and make it work for someone with a lighter skin tone as well.

I'm really impressed with these. I actually really prefer these to the other Extended Wear liner pencils from Sigma. These sharpen easier and actually wear longer.  These shades are super versatile as well. The formula isn't quite as soft as the Extended Wear, but sometimes I actually prefer that in a pencil liner because typically they hold up better. I just warm them up on my hand a bit first before applying them.

To me, these are actually a really great consistency. I've always said that sticky lip glosses do not bother me in the least because they typically last longer. These actually hold up similar to a stickier gloss, but they aren't super sticky.  I'm pretty sure there isn't an exact scale for gloss-stickiness, but I'd say these fall somewhere right in the middle. Not super sticky, but definitely not that watery slick feeling of some. I guess it's just all a matter of personal preference. I'd describe the scent as very sweet. Think cookie dough or cake batter-ish.

So what do you all think? To me,  the stand-out products are the eye palette and the eye shadow bases. Those are definitely worth checking out.

The BEST BB/CC Cream EVER?

...yes.

The first time I used this stuff, I knew things just got real, as they say.
Well that's technically not exactly how they say it, but you get what I mean.

No, this is not a sponsored praise-fest (if you've followed me for a while, you know that basically goes against everything I stand for), just probably the best beauty purchase of my year.


I knew when it came time to review this stuff for you all, (which I've been dying to do since the moment I used it and witnessed its awesomeness) it would be hard to do a typical review where I don't really tell you my thoughts until the end. Yeah, I realize I'm basically shouting from the beginning that it's awesome.
Part of the reason I'm extra excited about this besides the fact that it has totally changed and simplified my whole skincare/makeup routine, is because perfecting your skin is so important. To me, it's probably the most important aspect of a makeup routine. If your skin looks good, you can pretty much get away with anything else.
Because it is so very unique and amazing, there is lots more to share beyond my love it or hate it verdict.

So a description in a nutshell... It's the most multi-tasking bb/cc product I've ever tried. It has the same coverage as a full-coverage foundation, yet looks really natural. It has taken the place of my moisturizer in the morning, as well as my foundation, so to say it has simplified my routine would be an understatement.

Some progress in the kitchen...

So you may remember in my Christmas decor video (check that out here if you missed it), I mentioned that I was in the middle of painting our kitchen walls.  Well that painting project is DONE and I'm loving our new light and bright kitchen!


























I selected a really warm "greige".  We'll get more into that in a moment, but first let's take a look back at what it looked like before...


Totally not bad, but I was never a fan of how yellow that particular color read on the walls in there. It's actually a beautiful, warm tan that I really quite like in other rooms of the house, but in this one, it just never was right to me. Maybe it was the contrast of all the white cabinets on the walls. Who knows. I just know I'm really happy with the new color and how everything turned out.

The color I chose is Clay Beige by Benjamin Moore. I'd describe it as a very warm light gray. This one is perfect for this space because it's still warm in tone (to play well with the countertops, stone backsplash, and neighboring dining room painted in the original warm tan), but it's lighter. The hint of gray makes it interesting and far from a typical beige.  It reads very different throughout the day. Sometimes it looks a bit more gray, sometimes you can't tell it's gray at all. It's so pretty.

To me, it's just the perfect shade. I like a light and bright kitchen without being SOLID white. I like the tone-on-tone feel of it now. Feels clean, a little glam, yet still cozy.

You guys may remember me mentioning Edgecomb Gray by Benjamin Moore in my guest bedroom post (here).  I found these colors to be super similar, however I think I'd be more likely to choose the Clay Beige for more rooms because the Edgecomb Gray can read a bit too cool sometimes. Which I don't mind in the guest bedroom, but I wouldn't want it in a larger space, personally.  Clay Beige is a bit cozier I think.

I think for a space like this, where the wall space is actually super small (really just around the top of the cabinets and around the door and windows in the breakfast area), a dark color would look a little too jarring and heavy around the ceiling with all the white cabinets. I discovered while painting around the tops of the cabinets that the walls of this room were actually a super dark green at one point! That would have been interesting to see!

I also painted all the bead board in here. There is some covering the back of the island and also on the black splash on the area on the other side.


Not sure why whoever installed the stone backsplash throughout the rest of the kitchen didn't continue it on this side as well... Oh well. I really think the bead board is quite pretty over there anyway.

I also changed up the chalkboard wall for Christmas too!


You can check out how I created my chalkboard wall in this post.  It's so fun! I don't always plan on having a fancy little creation on there. I just think it's fun for certain holidays when I know we'll be having people over.  The possibilities are endless!

As far as future plans for the kitchen, it's still very much a work in progress. Which I think is what living in a home and making it your own is all about. I love that we still have so much to do over the rest of our lives in this house (yeah, I really don't want to move again...ever), so it's exciting to think we could eventually make it into anything we want over the years.

I really want to update the range hood soon. Maybe add something that looks more custom? Also, eventually update the appliances. Not for stainless for the sake of having stainless because that seems to be what people are thinking is only acceptable now-a-days.  Which is kind of silly to me.  I actually love white appliances when they're done right. Like this and this.  To me, it actually looks more thought-out.

I hate to say this because I hate doing things for the sake of being "trendy" especially in your own home, where decisions should reflect your taste, not someone else's, but I think stainless is kind of losing it's appeal. It seems in most newly-designed kitchens I've seen lately, white has been the popular choice. At our last house, when we re-did our kitchen, we replaced all the appliances with brand new, shiny stainless appliances in our pretty white kitchen. I love the look of that kitchen and I still do. Mostly because we got these amazing smudge-proof stainless by Frigidaire Gallery that have a really professional look without all the upkeep of stainless. I'd make that decision again and again.

But for this kitchen, I want to go another direction. I want it to look a bit warm and homey, while still looking very sleek and designed (eventually)... not like a professional test kitchen...haha.  I know we're going for white when we need to replace anything. Now, there are so many brands that are offering white in some of their best appliances. Right now, I just can't justify replacing appliances that look fine and that work perfectly.
...Well, with the exception of our wall oven, which has done some sketchy things lately.  So we've been giving it the side-eye. But when it does call it quits (hopefully not anytime soon), we'll go with a pretty shiny white like this one.
Our wall oven, range, hood, and dishwasher are original to the house and are about 15 years old. So they make me a little nervous...haha.

Our fridge isn't my favorite, but it's brand new so we'll work with it for a while. Maybe building it in like we did at our last place.

Like I said, lots of plans! But I feel like the wall color made such a difference and is a huge step in the right direction.

So what about you guys? Have you all done any painting projects lately? Isn't it crazy what a difference some paint can make??
